Measurement

What is measurement?

The measurement strand involves the assignment of a numerical value to an attribute of an object or event. While there is a degree of arbitrariness to what is included in this content area and how it is organised (whether around content or processes), the focus of the strand is the measurement of some attribute. In some cases, probability is seen as the measurement of chance and will be assigned to this strand, whereas in other documents it will remain as its own strand. Similarly, measuring angle is the measurement of the turning attribute and could be part of this strand. However, in some documents it is seen to be an integral part of geometry and located in the space strand.

Measurement has an important role to play in the mathematics curriculum. The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM, 1989) noted that 'measurement is of central importance to the curriculum because of its power to help children see that mathematics is useful in everyday life and to help them develop many mathematical concepts and skills' (p. 51). More recently they argue (NCTM, 2000) that measurement
