Chance and data

What are chance and data?

Probability and statistics are encountered with regularity in everyday life. Some mathematics educators suggest that this is one of the key numeracies in the new millennium (Steen, 1999; Zevenbergen, 2001). In part this is due to rapid changes to society and work, and the use of computer technology. Many educators and social commentators argue that the significant changes occurring in Western societies are akin to the changes that resulted from the move from agrarian communities to the organised workplaces of the Industrial Revolution. In today's new societies, we live in an information-drenched society commonly referred to as 'postmodern' or 'New Times', where through newspapers and the Internet people have access to all kinds of information. Unlike 'old times', (arising from the Industrial Revolution), where the production of goods was the key to wealth, contemporary life is framed as a global society where information is a key commodity.
