One company of cavalry from the 1st Regt Ills and one compy of Infantry from the 15 Ills Vol will be detailed at once to proceed to Montgomery City Mo there to act in conjunction with the Home Guards in repelling a threatened attack upon that point If they find upon reliable information that the enemy are encamped in any place in the neighborhood they will then proceed at once to break up the camp should this fource not be deemed sufficient they will immediately report to these Hd Quarters all the fact learned by them Rations will be sent tomorrow if it is deemed advisable to keep this force detached for a longer than one day

On July 28, USG issued Special Orders No. 5. "In pursuance of directions from the Department of the West, to send a Battallion from this command to occupy Fulton, Mo. the 15th Ills. Volunteers, Lt. Col. E. F. W. Ellis, Commanding, will furnish the detail. The Company now at Montgomery City, Mo. will formpart of the detail and orders will emanate from these Head Quarters to that effect."
