Night before last 1 I come down to Jefferson Bks. with my old Regt. leaving my trunk at the Planter's House 2 flattering myself that at 9 O'Clock the next day I would return to St. Louis, get a leave of absence for a few days and pop down upon you taking you by surprize. But my destination was suddenly changed, 9 O'Clock brought me orders, (and cars to carry a regiment) to proceed at once to this place and assume command. 3 My present command here numbers about 3000 and will be increased to 4000 to-morrow 4 and probably much larger the next day. When I come there was great talk of an attack upon this place and it was represented that there was 8000 rebels within a few miles but I am not ready to credit the report. 5
I have envited Mr. Rollins of Galena to accept a place on my Staff. 6 I wish you would tell Orvil to say to him that I would like to have him come as soon as possible if he accepts the position.
I sent you some money the other day and requested Ford 7 to write to you. Did he do it ? The four gold dollars were thrown in extra for the four children. Bless their hearts I wish I could see them.
I certainly feel very greatful to the people of Ill. for the interest they seem to have taken in me and unasked too. Whilst I was about Springfield I certainly never blew my own trumpet and was not aware that I attracted any attention but it seems from what I have heard from there the people, who were perfect
