Head Quarters Dist S. E. Mo|
Cairo Sept 29th 1861|
I have just received information that the Steamer J. H. Dickey landed on her trip down yesterday seven Boxs mdse at a point between Birds Point and Commerce. The Goods were marked Charleston Mo and a wagon and twenty men were waiting there to recieve them.
If you have control of the cars I wish you to take or send the effective portion of infantry Regiment out and secure the goods if possible.
Should the cars not be in your possession send all the cavalry you can spare and let the infantry march out part way to support them should they be forced to retreat
