The tapes were transcribed verbatim to preserve the original concept and process of this project as well as the historical veracity of the tapes themselves. Two artists objected to this process: Carl Andre and Joseph Kosuth did not want to participate in this book unless they could edit their transcripts. Therefore the book went forward without them, and their interviews do not appear. For ease of reading, most “ums” and “ahs” have been deleted, run-on sentences have been grammatically concluded, and punctuation has been incorporated to reflect the recorded emphasis and meanings of the conversations. Brackets are used to indicate words that have been added or altered. Totally indecipherable or inaudible passages are noted, again in brackets, in the text.
