Extending the Research: A Study of Narrative
Production Among African American Children
This book builds upon and extends the research on narrative production among African American children. This study incorporates a mixed research design integrating qualitative and quantitative methodology. The research methodology for this book was influenced by the ethnography of communication and the ethnographic study of ways of speaking and using language. In addition, I used experimental procedures to elicit the narratives from the children in the study were implemented.
Fifteen African American children, between the ages of 6 and 10 years, from a predominantly African American low-income community in the northeastern United States participated in the study. Table 3.1 lists the participants by age and sex.
