(12:1) God said to Abram, “Go away from your land, from your birthplace, and from your father's house, to the land that I will show you.”
NOTE: Originally, his name was Abram. At his circumcision, God changed his name to Abraham; and the name Sarai was changed to Sarah (17:5).
Go away from your land Some say that changing your place of residence helps to have an evil decree cancelled. For it says “God said to Abram, 'Go away from your land,'” and in the next verse it says “I will make you into a great nation” (Yevamot 64a).
NOTE: Abraham and Sarah were both destined to be infertile, but God rescinded His decree and promised that they would become a great nation.
(12:5) Abram took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, and all their belongings, as well as the people they had made in Haran, and they left, heading toward Canaan; and they came to Canaan.
