(45:3) Joseph said to his brothers, “I am Joseph! Is my father still alive?” His brothers were so startled, they could not respond.
His brothers were so startled, they could not respond When R. Elazar came to this verse, he wept. He said: If the rebuke of flesh and blood—that is, Joseph—is so powerful as to stun the brothers, imagine how overwhelming the reproach of God will be when He takes me to task in the hereafter (Chagigah 4b).
NOTE: Joseph's reproach is contained in the words “Is my father still alive?” He implied: Is it possible that my father could survive the anguish you inflicted on him?
(45:12) You and my brother Benjamin can see with your own eyes that it is my mouth that is speaking to you.
You and my brother Benjamin can see with your own eyes What is the meaning of “You and my brother Benjamin can see”? R. Elazar said: Joseph told his brothers: Just as I feel no resentment against Benjamin who was not yet born at the time of my sale, so I have no resentment against you (Megillah 16b).
