Joseph, his brothers … died R. Chama b. R. Chanina said: Joseph lived 110 years, whereas his brothers lived 120 years. Why did Joseph die before his brothers? Because he behaved in a high-handed manner (Berachot 58a).
NOTE: Pirkei d' R. Eliezer explains that Joseph's life was shortened by ten years because he heard ten times his brothers referring to Jacob as “your servant, our father” without stopping them. Now in the Torah, this phrase is mentioned only five times, but Joseph heard it five times from his brothers and again five times from the interpreter, so that he heard it ten times. The five times are at Genesis 43:28; 45:25, 27, 30, 32.
