(27:20) You, Moses, must command the children of Israel to take for you clear illuminating oil, made from hand-crushed olives, to keep the lamp constantly burning.
to take for you R. Shmuel b. Nachmani said: It says “to take for you,” which implies “the light of the menorah is meant to bring honor to Israel, and not to Me”; I do not need its light, says God (Menachot 86b).
made from hand-crushed olives It was taught: If you see olive oil in your dream, you may look forward to attaining the light of Torah scholarship. For it says “Let them take for you oil … made from olives, ” which was used in the menorah; and in the tabernacle, the menorah stood close to the ark that contained the tablets, which are the essence of the Torah. Thus, oil is associated with Torah knowledge (Berachot 57a).
