(1:51) When the tabernacle is ready to set out, the Levites shall take it down, and when it is to be pitched, the Levites shall set it up. Any non-Levite who comes close shall die.
Any non-Levite who comes close shall die The story is told about a non-Jew who came to Hillel and asked, “Would you make me a convert on condition that I be appointed high priest?” Hillel told him, “First, go and study the Torah and the laws of priesthood.” He went and started to learn. When he came to the verse, “Any non-Levite who comes close shall die, ” he asked, “To whom does this verse apply?” “Even to David, king of Israel, ” Hillel replied.
NOTE: Hillel chose David as an example because David was a descendant of Ruth, who was a convert; yet even though he was a king, he was included in the prohibition. In light of this, the convert would understand that he had no prospect of becoming a high priest (Shabbat 31a).
(2:17) The communion tent and the camp of the Levites shall journey in the middle of the other camps. The people shall travel in the same order as they camp. Each person shall be in his place, according to each one's banner.
