Recruiting and Retaining Teachers: Understanding Why Teachers Teach

As well as drawing on recent research studies on teacher recruitment and retention, our work is based on a national survey of over 2,000 sixth formers and third-year undergraduates, on surveys of our own primary and secondary trainees and on over 80 interviews with teachers, from headteachers to NQTs.

We owe thanks to many people in the production of this book. In particular we would like to thank the CfBT and Town Close Charity for their financial support for studies undertaken. We very gratefully acknowledge the work of our colleague Ann Oliver who has been a co-researcher on several of our projects. Anna Clarkson and her colleagues also merit much thanks for being unfailingly patient and understanding about the time it has taken us to produce this book. We also greatly appreciate the help of students and sixth formers for finding time to complete questionnaires and being interviewed. We are grateful to headteacher Paul Grant for allowing access to the school, pupils and teachers at Robert Clack School, Dagenham, and for giving permission for the school to be identified in this book. Thanks also to Helen Harding for deciphering Anne's scrawl and unravelling the logic of her many inserts and crossings out. Finally, thanks to the many teachers who gave their time to tell us of the trials and tribulations of their lives and work.
