I am indebted to many people for their support and encouragement-personal and intellectual-over the last few years in which this book has been completed. To name some of them: Helen Brocklehurst, Berenice Carroll, Cynthia Enloe, Simon Murden, Palena Neale, Spike Peterson, Jindy Pettman, Susan Roberts, Fiona Sampson, Hazel Smith and Gillian Youngs. As always, the support from the members of the British International Studies Association gender group as well as from the International Studies Association feminist and gender section has proved invaluable.
Most of the work for this book was completed while I was at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth-though it was at Queen's University in Belfast that the book was finally completed. I am grateful to the University of Wales for a grant awarded to me to carry out research for this project in 1997.
The care and presence of my daughters, Tessa and Laura, as well as my parents are a constant reminder of what is really important in my life, and I thank them for that. This book is dedicated to Cynthia Weber, who has lived with this project-and all that went alongside it-through its various reincarnations and guises. We are both now very happy that the specific form of dedication is now a lived one.
