THE LATE DIALOGUES: NATURE, MAN AND SOCIETY

In Plato's Republic there is latent tension between man as a contemplative being and as a member of society. In the late dialogues this is made fully explicit. The Parmenides, Theaetetus and Sophist deal with the foundation of metaphysics and epistemology and are addressed to theoretical man. The continuation of the Sophist, the Statesman, attempts to translate theoretical philosophy to practical philosophy, a theory of state. Nevertheless, the contrast between the statesman and the philosopher persists.

Apparently Plato in his later years conceived of an ambitious project, which from new points of view was intended to place man in the transitory world of time and space; man belongs in society but also in the physical world, and he has a history. Nothing certain can be said about that world that is merely an image of the ideal one. But that which cannot be known with certainty can be described by an account of what might be the case, by means of the 'as if' of the myth.


THETIMAEUSANDCRITIAS

Timaeus, the principal speaker in the dialogue that bears his name, is said to have come from Southern Italy. Most likely he is not a historical person. While the Stranger from Elea represents one Italic tradition-the formal, logico-metaphysical one from Parmenides-Timaeus represents another, the teleological science of Pythagorean ancestry, and is presented as an expert in astronomy. In the Timaeus Socrates meets Timaeus, the politician Hermocrates, and the older Critias, the grandfather of the infamous Critias, and accordingly Plato's great grandfather. In dramatic terms these dialogues can be dated to some time before the Peloponnesian Wars with their misery caused the world to be out of joint.

Socrates begins the Timaeus (Tim. 17 A ff.) with a summary of an account of the perfect state, which he presented the day before. This summary is strikingly similar to Plato's Republic, although with one significant difference. In compendium-like form we learn of the division of labour, the education of the guardians, equal rights of women and the economic community. But the summary stops with the fifth book of the Republic; there is no reference to the metaphysical sections or to the description
