This book is the product of many people's labours. Its genesis was in a joint meeting of the Mountain Research Group and Developing Areas Research Group of the Royal Geographical Society-Institute of British Geographers (RGS-IBG), held as part of the Annual Conference of the RGS-IBG and hosted by the University of Plymouth in January 2001. Thanks go to all those who helped in its organization, who contributed papers, comments or an open mind, and who braved transport disruptions and unseasonal weather(!) to make the sessions at Plymouth such a success. The collection has been inspired by many events and personalities, not least the editor's conversations with colleagues and postgraduate students associated with the MA in Globalization and Development at the University of Liverpool; with members of the RADIX website and e-list; and with the organizers and participants at two workshops on disaster vulnerability hosted by the University of Middlesex in 1999 and 2002, whose insightful comments and inspiring ideas will be seen throughout this work.
During the writing, editing and production of the book debts are owed for the support, patience and inspiration offered by Ulli Huber, for the copy-editing skills of Alan Fidler, for the organizational and editorial support offered by Jo Jacomb and Ann Michael at Routledge.
