Minibus drivers' and escorts' checklist

WHAT SHOULD A DRIVER/ESCORT DO?-COMMUNITY TRANSPORT ASSOCIATION ADVICE
• Make sure that children are supervised when boarding or leaving the minibus; take particular care if children have to exit from the back of the minibus. Plan which passengers will sit in the front seats and by the doors.
• Never allow passengers to board/leave until the vehicle is at a complete standstill, and safely parked by an adjacent pavement or other traffic-free area.
• Do not drive away until everyone is seated comfortably, facing the front and wearing a seat-belt (when fitted). If in special seats, or using booster cushions ensure these are properly fixed and adjusted.
• Escorts should sit where they can see the passengers-not in the seat adjacent to the driver.
• Always ensure that ambulant disabled passengers are seated safely and comfortably and that anyone travelling in a wheelchair is also safely secured. Wheelchairs not in use must be securely stored.
• Make sure that you have a complete list of the passengers being carried with a note of any special medical or other needs.
• Keep such a list with other relevant documents in a place where it can be readily found in the event of an accident.
• Take care when using passenger lifts and other specialist equipment. Always comply with the manufacturer's instructions.
• Do not allow boisterous play of any kind.
• Always park so that children or elderly passengers can step onto the footway, not onto the carriageway.
• Take particular care when reversing the vehicle if children are nearby. (Nearly a quarter of all deaths involving vehicles at work occur while the vehicle is reversing.) Avoid reversing whenever possible. If it is unavoidable, seek adult
