BY ACCIDENT OR…?

Issue raised

The issue raised in this case is the need to be alert for staff development opportunities that may arise from unexpected or unanticipated sources.


Background

The case explores the development and presentation of an online course offered by a distance teaching university. The non-credit course, Mining Information in the Internet Age, was developed for a continuing education division, and was designed to improve participants' skills at finding, evaluating and using information from the Internet. It also provided access to the university's electronic library, and included material and exercises designed to ensure that users were able to make maximum use of electronic resources. The case reporter was the writer of the course, supported by a team of academic and library staff.


PART 1

I like my work. I've been involved in distance and open learning for many years, and have enjoyed working in a variety of institutions, watching and being a part of ongoing developments in the field. Course design and development is a great field to be part of, especially with all the new and emerging technologies that are enabling us to try out new ways of doing things.
