This chapter is not really about open schooling. It is about out-of-school secondary education at a distance. Many of the projects described are far from open as regards curriculum choices, or even in some cases entry requirements. Some set fixed or closed requirements about time, place and pace of study. They are open only in so far as they have opened up opportunities for thousands of students who would otherwise have been deprived of them to continue their secondary level studies after they were unable to do so in formal schools.
