Chapter 7

Skill acquisition in SGT

INTRODUCTION
In this chapter we wish to show how SGT can be used to develop a set of nationally recognized key skills that lead towards employability. In particular we also wish to provide a framework for teaching specific psychomotor or practical skills. We will describe the key skills and employability framework and then consider how they can be provided by SGT. This will be followed by a description of the process of acquiring practical skills and the outline of a useful framework for teaching them.
KEY SKILLS

Recommendation 21

We recommend that institutions of higher education begin immediately to develop, for each programme they offer, a 'programme specification' which identifies potential stopping-off points and gives the intended outcomes of the programme in terms of:

■ the knowledge and understanding that a student will be expected to have upon completion;
key skills: communication, numeracy, the use of information technology and learning how to learn;
■ cognitive skills, such as an understanding of methodologies or ability in critical analysis;
subject specific skills, such as laboratory skills.
