The European region comprising states east of central Europe, extending south to the Balkan states of Albania, Bulgaria, Romania and the former Yugoslavia, and including the former Soviet Republics, except those of central Asia (which lie outside Europe's geographical borders). Following the post-war division of Europe along the 'iron curtain', the term eastern Europe gained a political connotation, being used to denote all communist (and more recently post-communist) states east of the Oder-Neisse line. In this usage it excluded two Balkan states, Greece and Turkey, and included, on political rather than geographical criteria, the communist states of central Europe.
