To DESCRIBE and expound at greater length, to formulate more rules and make further regulations, would be very easy to do. And entirely unnecessary. The time has come to cease talking and begin working, not in short bursts but continuously for at least the duration of a paragraph; not merely using the wretchedly overworked full stop and the much-abused comma, but also enlisting the allies and utilizing the accessories.
First we shall deal with single, self-contained paragraphs, which, therefore, will at least require no paragraphing; then with consecutive passages of two or more paragraphs.
The examples have been so arranged that, with every 'opening' (a left-hand page and its complementary right-hand page) constituting a unit, we begin on the left (A) with a paragraph unstopped, uncapitalled, unitalicized, 'unquoted', pass in the next column (B) to a semi-literate or, at best, a very slipshod handling of the same paragraph; then in the third column (C-on the left of the right-hand page), this paragraph competently, unimaginatively, unsubtly pointed, capitalled, italicized, etc.; and finally, in the fourth column (D), an artistic or imaginative, a subtle and delicate treatment. In (II), Consecutive Passages, we deal with the same features, with the addition of paragraphing that ascends from null to stupid or careless, then to competent but dull, and ending with something rather more satisfying.
First, the single paragraphs or paragraph-equivalents.
