Part 4

Themes and Conclusions

Much ground has been covered and we have learned many lessons. In this final section we critically revisit our notion of participatory evaluation and endeavor to derive recommendations for its application in schools and school districts. In doing so we take a systematic look at observed impact and consequences of the applications that were studied and then give direct consideration to explaining those findings. In our discussion and interpretation we are informed significantly by a variety of sources: specifically, our reading of the research literature; our own ideas grounded in past practice; and the insights and points offered by Michael Huberman and Marvin Alkin. We end the chapter, and indeed the book, with our own thoughts about integrating participatory evaluation into the educational change puzzle and then challenge readers to apply the principles and lessons inherent in the collection to their own organizational circumstances.
