Targeting for success-the European golf market

Abstract

This paper analyses the major European golf markets in terms of number of courses and golfers. It compares recent growth trends throughout Europe and compares the typical profile of golfers in the major markets. A theoretical “mature market” in terms of the number of courses is suggested to identify which countries have the biggest need for new courses. The paper also calls for detailed catchment research before building new courses and shows how geodemographic analysis can be used to compare catchments.

1 Introduction

The R&A “Demand for Golf” has been widely quoted since its publication in 1989. The report pointed to the basic shortfall of golf courses in the UK and the subsequent growth in courses has been dramatic. This paper looks at the recent growth in courses and golfers throughout Europe and looks at future potential. It also calls for thorough research into new developments and looks at geodemographics as a method for analysing catchments.

This paper is in four main sections:

The growth of golf in the main European markets

The profile of golfers in the main European markets

The need for new courses in Europe

Geodemographics and their use in golf facility targeting.
