Particular attention needs to be focused on the frequency of DNA transfer events involving GMOs similar to those likely to be used in the food industry and the environmental factors governing such events. The extent to which transformation and transduction contribute to microbial genetic plasticity in the gastrointestinal ecosystem also remains to be determined.
