ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

In addition to the literature cited in this book, much of the text draws on my own personal experiences of working in design and human factors. I am grateful to my colleagues within Philips Design who have helped me in the development of many of the ideas contained in the book-I have learned a lot from them since joining the studio six and a half years ago. The numerous awards and publications that we have accrued in that period are testimony to the imagination, inspiration and professionalism of the colleagues that I have had the privilege to work with.

Similarly, I owe a debt of gratitude to many fellow professionals from other design studios, universities and research institutions with whom I have had contact, through conferences or just informally. Again, this has been a valuable learning experience.

Much of the photography in this book is the work of Jim Cockerille (Figures 2.8, 3.5, 3.15, 3.16, 4.7). Jim also provided the creative direction for the cover art. Other photographers who supplied material for the book are Jesper Sandholt (Figures 2.6, 3.4) and Alastair Macdonald (Figures 2.5, 4.8).
