Type 2 diabetes now affects over 5% of the world's population and is affecting progressively younger populations. This epidemic of type 2 diabetes parallels the global increase in obesity. The reasons for these concomitant epidemics remain poorly understood, but involve the complex interactions of genetic predisposition, prenatal environment, and the major lifestyle and environmental changes brought about by modernization, industrialization, and globalization.
Previously regarded as a disease of adults, type 2 diabetes is now seen in adolescence and even childhood. Pediatricians and physicians caring for the young have to decide whether a newly diagnosed child or adolescent with diabetes has type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, ADM (atypical diabetes mellitus), MODY (maturity onset diabetes of the young), or one of the other recently described forms of diabetes. In some parts of the world, such as Japan, type 2 diabetes has become more prevalent than type 1 diabetes, even in childhood and adolescence.
