Developing Better Grading
and Reporting Systems
In this chapter we turn to building a comprehensive reporting system. Because it's impossible to serve all reporting needs with a
single instrument, parents and educators must work together to develop reporting systems that include a variety of communication
tools. Such systems typically begin with a report card, but then add
other reporting tools to meet different reporting purposes and needs.
I will describe some of these tools and explain how each can be
used. I'll also show how adhering to principles of honesty and fairness can unite parents and educators in their efforts to build an efficient and effective reporting system.
The Importance of Purpose
The most important consideration when selecting the tools to include in a reporting system is each tool's purpose. This requires
thinking about three vital aspects of communication:
|1. ||What information do we want to communicate?|
|2. ||Who is the primary audience for that information?|
|3. ||How will that information be used?|
Once the purpose is clear, it's a lot easier to select the reporting tool
that best serves that particular purpose.
