The Transition to Civilian Life

Getting children out of armed groups is a major accomplishment that ends heinous abuses of children’s rights and positions children to rejoin their families and participate in education, jobs, and civilian lives. Child soldiers’ safe exit from armed groups frequently evokes a mixture of relief, joy, and hope among families and friends and also among humanitarian agencies.

For child soldiers, however, the situation may be clouded in ambiguity and worry (Mergelsberg 2005). Said a 20-year old from Sierra Leone who had spent many of his formative years with the RUF:

I know how to be a soldier and to fight. I can use weapons, train, and
decide how to attack. I have thought of myself as a soldier for years …
I haven’t been in my village since I was a little boy. My parents saw me
last as a child. 1 have no job, and people look at me like maybe 1 am a
troublemaker.

His concerns about making the transition to civilian life relate to his identity as a soldier and his uncertainties about how he will be regarded in his village. Uncertainties about identity, jobs, and role are among the greatest life stresses for many former child soldiers, who want above all to be normal and like other children.

These concerns are particularly poignant for children who have never lived outside an armed group. For them, “reintegration” is a misnomer implying they are going back to a situation they experienced previously, when in fact they are entering uncharted terrain. Romantic ideas about
