This book seeks to provide new insight into the protean life of W.E.B. Du Bois by examining individuals, occurrences, themes, places, organizations, and the like. Given that he lived a full ninety-five years, resided on three continents, traveled relentlessly, continually evolved politically and philosophically, and encountered a countless number of individuals, drawing up a list that would do full justice to the man was no small task. Inevitably there are categories that have been excluded that may give rise to quibbles. However, the intent of this project was to include—to the extent possible—entries that point to the leading influences on his rich and instructive life. Cross-references are included that should aid in helping to guide the reader through the thicket of his complex life. The photographs that are included provide a visual guide through various stages of his life. Bibliographic references are included that point the reader toward other sources that shed further light on the life of Du Bois. In that regard, the biography, W.E.B. Du Bois: Biography of a Race, by David Levering Lewis and the bibliography, Annotated Bibliography of the Published Writings of W.E.B. Du Bois, compiled by Herbert Aptheker are useful starting points.
