HART, ANDREW. Senior Lecturer in Education at the Research and Graduate School of Educational Studies, University of Southampton, England, where he teaches media studies in the MA Ed. course and supervises M. Phil./Ph.D. research. He also teaches in the postgraduate initial training course in English, drama, and media studies. He has published widely on media education and has worked closely with teachers as Director of the Southampton Media Education Group (a winner of the British Film Institute's Paddy Whannel Award for innovation in Media Education) as Director of the Southern Media Education Research Network and now Director of the Media Education Centre.

Recent publications include Teaching Television; Making “The Real World”; and Understanding the Media. He also wrote, with Gordon Cooper, the British Broadcasting Corporation Radio 4 series, “Understanding the Media,” on which the book of the same name was based. In 1993, he completed a ground-breaking research project, “Models of Media Education,” which was a study of English teachers teaching media education developed as Media in the Classroom. His latest book is with Sue Hackman: Developing Media in English. He is currently extending his classroom research through an international study of media teaching in English-speaking countries on four continents. HISTORICAL CONTEXT. An approach to the analysis of media content that recognizes that a media text often derives its significance from the events of the day. Historical context can follow five lines of inquiry:
