REPRESENTATION. A critical beginning point for media literacy education, which maintains that media presentations are merely representations of reality and, as a result, present a version of reality that is distinct from the event being recorded. Instead, media text stands for, symbolizes, or describes people, places, events, or ideas that are real and have an existence outside the text. Considerations that affect the reality include the limitations of the medium to capture the event (e.g., the frame of the photograph), lack of context, and the intrusion of the medium on the event. However, the verisimilitude of the media can blur this distinction, so that individuals often mistake media depictions for reality. See also EDUCATIONAL PRINCIPLES, MEDIA LITERACY
