Moving Forward

THE PRINCIPLES DESCRIBED IN THIS BOOK provide guidance to leaders, consultants, and practitioners who wish to build collaborative organizations. These principles are the basis for developing and sustaining collaborative advantage by systematically creating and managing organizations to capitalize on collaborative opportunities. Today's business environment is so complex and changing so rapidly that collaboration is required. No one individual or small set of individuals can manage the complexity characteristic of today's organization. How well organizations operationalize the principles of collaboration will determine much of their effectiveness in the competitive arena.

The transformation to a collaborative organization is similar to the transformation to Six Sigma from total quality management. It requires time and sustained effort. An organization may, for a variety of sound reasons, choose to implement only a subset of the ten principles presented here. However, the number and effectiveness of principles operationalized will determined the
