FAMILY IMMIGRATION. Mean of recency of migration of maternal and paternal families to the United States. Maternal migration categories coded as: (1) mother, parents, and grandparents born in the United States; (2) mother and parents born in the United States and one or more grandparents born outside the United States; (3) mother born in the United States and one or both parents born outside the United States; and (4) mother born outside the United States. Paternal migration was coded the same. Mean equals 2.08; standard deviation equals .77.
FARM BACKGROUND. Coded one if the place either the mother or father had lived longest before marriage was a farm; otherwise coded zero. Proportion with farm background equals .09.
1962 EDUCATION. Mean number of years of education of the mother and father in 1962. Mean equals 12.26; standard deviation equals 1.90.
1962 FINANCIAL RESOURCES. Mean of 1961 income and 1962 assets, measured in thousands of dollars. Liquid assets exclude house value. Mean equals 4.71; standard deviation equals 2.86.
1962 HOME OWNERSHIP. Coded one if the parents owned their own home in 1962; all others are coded zero. Proportion with home ownership equals .63.
