My thanks to Deborah Gershenowitz for her support of this project and to William Astore for providing a careful and intelligent reading of an early draft. I also thank the four anonymous reviewers for their helpful suggestions. Without the help of Shelia Smith and my wife, Barbara, this book would never have been written. Thanks!
As I was finishing this book, Hurricane Katrina struck Louisiana and Southern Mississippi. We left our home in Mississippi and showed up on the doorstep of our friends Paul, Bonnie, Bailey, and Bridget Bauman. They took in our brood of three adults, two children, and four cats until it was safe for us to return to our own home. For opening their home to us and for being such gracious hosts, I dedicate this book to them, with thanks and with love.
