The rich variety of human beings that populate our profession makes school renewal both wonderfully interesting and challenging. As we interact we create little professional cultures that act on us to make change easy or difficult. These chapters present research on us and the social systems we create. Chapter 8 looks at our individual differences and how those differences affect our participation in staff development. Chapter 9 looks at leadership from the perspective of personality and professional orientation. Chapter 10 presents three studies comparing not only staff development and leadership in high- and low-achieving settings but also responses to three types of governance—individual, school, and district. We close in Chapter 11 by discussing the development of standards by the National Council for Staff Development.
