ON THE FUTURE OF SCIENCE
I was just wondering which topic to make the focus of this conclusion — Bourdieu and Marxism, Bourdieu and science, Bourdieu and intellectuals? — when Libération published three pages on “Bourdieu's little books”, Bourdieu's networks, and the “thunderous” launching of his publishing house1… Reading the article, I concluded that I had been very naive in taking Bourdieu seriously; I had devoted months to reading him and re-reading him, full-time(!); and I had striven to show, and to document, that despite all his proclamations of being scientific, his sociology was nothing but an ideological discourse.
I could very well have concluded my critical reading by applying to Bourdieu his own criticism of Montesquieu's theory of climates and of “the logic of the mode of argumen-
