Reviewing your own performance documentation can help you to become a better manager and a more effective and successful employee. Using the lessons that you have learned from this book, review performance documentation that has been written about you.

FROM LESSON 1 Review recent performance documentation that was written about you —

Does it contain enough information using specific, objective language for you to understand your strengths and opportunities?

Circle any statements that you do not fully understand. Create questions that you can ask the writer of the document.

FROM LESSON 2 Review recent performance documentation that was written about you — Did the writer use observations to support subjective statements? Circle any subjective statements that you find. Underline any observations that support those statements. Are there any subjective statements that do not have supporting observations? Observe carefully your own performance. Are there examples or observations that would support the subjective statements? Consider what you would ask the writer, given those observations.

FROM LESSON 3 Review recent performance documentation that was written about you that contains evaluations and decisions — Did the writer provide enough description for you to understand your strengths and opportunities? Did the writer present a description of the standard against which the result/behavior/new skill would be measured?

FROM LESSON 4 Review recent performance documentation that was written about you that contains evaluations and decisions —

Are the descriptions provided specific and complete? Is there any language that you feel is vague? Are there questions that you could ask the writer that would help you to capitalize on your strengths? Are there questions that you could ask the writer that would help you to identify and improve upon your opportunities?

FROM LESSON 5 Review your current performance objectives —

Do the objectives clearly define expectations and standards for successful completion? Do the objectives describe performance that can be observed and/or measured? Do they contain enough detail to be useful performance objectives for you and your team?
