I happily acknowledge here three colleagues to whom this work is intellectually indebted: Professors Elisabeth Schüssler Fiorenza, Obery M. Hendricks Jr., and Daniel Boyarin. Elisabeth Schüssler Fiorenza pointed out that women mark the important narrative moments of the Gospel of John, and I have followed the nodes of women's agency that Schüssler Fiorenza traced over two decades ago.1 And in her essay on Johannine tradition,2 Schüssler Fiorenza definitively determined what is and is not Johannine tradition and why, and I have identified the literary legacy of the Beloved Disciple and his Beloved Community guided by her arguments in that essay. In his doctoral dissertation, Obery Hendricks applied Frederick Jameson's concept of [root conflict] to the development of Johannine tradition.3 In a field sometimes transfixed by questions of redaction and reconstruction, Hendricks' dissertation treated questions of ideology and interests, and in my own humble fashion I follow here the trail he blazed there. Finally, Daniel Boyarin's essay on the significance of the term Ioudaioi in the Gospel of John is a masterpiece, clarifying confused and confusing issues of group identity ancient and modern.4 He rightly traces the conflict inscribed in the Gospel of John back to its roots in the Persian period, while delivering us—if we would be delivered— from anachronistically reading Rabbinic Judaism and early Christianity into the first half of the first century. I claim neither that all or any of these scholars would approve of the service into which I have pressed their ideas, nor that they would agree with the conclusions I have drawn from them. I insist, however, that their insights are foundational: any contemporary, critical construal of Johannine tradition must presuppose them. I have done so throughout this book.
