In this chapter we will explore a variety of the assessed coursework components, or elements, which may contribute to the overall quality and classification of your degree. We will look in turn at:
Essays
Reports
Peer assessment
Self-assessment
Group work
Research projects
Final year dissertations
Presentations
Assessed seminars
Vivas
Work placements

You may not have all of these on your degree programme. You may have some of these which are on your course, but which are not assessed and don't actually count towards getting a good degree. How much attention you devote to any assessed work should naturally depend to some extent on how much it is likely to contribute towards your overall degree performance. However, assessed coursework of any kind is not usually there just for assessment, but to help enrich and focus your learning. Therefore, even if a particular element of coursework is not assessed and does not seem to count, it may well be important in helping you to develop knowledge, skills and attributes which pay dividends in other assessed components of your course, not least final exams.
