PARLIAMENT CONCERNING HIS CLAIM TO FAMILY LANDS IN
ORKNEY AND SHETLAND. 18 NOVEMBER 1581.
Unto your Maiestie and lordis of parliament humlie menis and schawis Henry now Lord Sinclair successour to umquhile Williame, erle of Cathnes, Lord Sinclair Quha co[n]queist certaine landis heretabillie within the boundis of the lordschippis of Orknay and Zeitland Quhilk your grace's predicessoris King James the therd of maist worthie memorie declarit he had na rycht therto And be his letter under the privie seill willit that my said predicessour his successoris and thair factoris suld be anserit of the samin without impediment As the said letter of the dait the thrid day of Februar the yeir of god Im iiiic lxxi yeiris proportis Be wertew of the quhilk the said umquhile Williame, Erie Cathnes and Henry, Lord Sinclair my guidsir bruikit the saidis landis to his deceis quhilk wes in the feild of Flowdoun And be the minoritie of umquhile Williame, Lord Sinclair my fader the saidis landis and als the landis of umquhile Sir David Sinclair his erne to quhom I succeid As narrest and lauchfull air wer Intromettit with be the officiaris Impute be your hienes dairrest guidsir king James the fyft of guid memorie Quha upoun the sute of my said said' umquhile fader directit his grace's commission to umquhile Oliver Sinclair gevand him power to tak cognition Quhat possessiouns landis and rowmes the saidis umquhile Henry, Lord Sinclair my guidsir umquhile Sir David Sinclair and utheris our freindis (to quhom I succeid air) had within the saidis lordschippis of Orknay and Zeitland And gif my said umquhile fader had rycht therto To caus him be anserit therof thankfullie and bruik the samin siclyk as his predecessoris did of befoir As the said Commissioun subscryvit with his hand and under his hienes signet Off the dait the xxi day of Marche and of his hienes Regnne the xxviii yeiris beiris/ Lyk as my said umquhile fader and I than his appeirand air continewing in our persute of our rychtis of the saidis landis presentit supplicatioun to your hienes darrest moder Berand that the said umquhile Henry Lord Sinclair my guidsir and umquhile Sir David Sinclair knycht To quhom I aught and suld be air conqueist certaine particular landis and rowmes within the lies and boundis of Orknay and Zeitland respective fra the quhilkis my said umquhile fader wes stoppit and debarrit throwe occasioun and trubill in thai partis Upoun the quhilk hir grace willing and being of mynd that my said umquhile fader and I sould nawyss be hurt of ony our landis or rowmes within the lies and boundis foirsaidis quhairunto I haif rycht and titill be my said umquhile guidsir and Sir David Sinclair Directit hir hienes Commissioun under hir handwrit and signet To the shereff of Orknay and failzeing of him be absens or refuiss To his Lovittis makand thame shereffis of Orknay and
