Focal Events and Literacy
This Appendix lists the focal events observed for each teacher and a brief description of each activity.
Sound Spelling Cards A series of cards breaking down the soundspelling correspondence of each English phoneme. Each card contained a picture that corresponded with the sound. A rhyme corresponded with each picture. Below the picture was a list of all the English spellings that make that sound. The cards were displayed on the walls of all rooms at Westway.
Dictation This activity functioned as a traditional spelling test in Celia's classroom. Celia read a series of words or short sentences to the students. The words were found in the Open Court teacher's guide. Individually, the students wrote the words in their dictation books. The correct spelling of the words were reviewed with the class.
Blending This activity was described in the Open Court teaching manual as the [heart and soul] of phonics instruction. As Celia wrote the sounds of a word on the board, students said each sound. Then, the
