Muscular Fitness Training

THE NATURE OF MUSCULAR FITNESS TRAINING

The Surgeon General's Report on Physical Activity and Health (1996) makes a compelling case for the health benefits that can be accrued from weight training. Muscular Fitness training encompasses a very broad spectrum of activities. Approximately 46 million people engage in activities such as free weights, which include barbells and dumbbells; variable resistance activities such as nautilus equipment; and free body exercises which require no equipment. From a health and wellness perspective, there are many positive changes that occur in the body when a sound muscular fitness training program is followed. There are a number of different types of activities that are related to muscular fitness training:

Resistance Training: A general term that refers to all types of activities and exercises which focus on the development of muscular strength or muscular endurance. There are many modalities that can be used such as free weights, machines, elastic rubber bands, and free body exercises to name just a few.

Weight Training: A generic term that involves any activity which uses free weights or machines. Generally speaking, this activity focuses on strength activities that are conducted for health reasons or for increasing one's strength in order to improve performance in a specific sport. It is not a sport in and of itself like powerlifting or body building.

Powerlifting: A pure strength sport that consists of three events: the squat, the bench press, and the deadlift. Athletes compete in these three events in various categories based on their body weight.

Bodybuilding: A sport in which the primary objective is to develop muscle size for health, aesthetic, and display purposes. Bodybuilders focus on achieving
