Introduction

In preparing this chapter, I worked initially from the teacher's own written account of her teaching, supplemented by her subsequent comments on my first draft. At the time she was writing she was particularly interested in the ideas that children bring to their learning, the way they try to make sense of new experiences and the way they develop new ideas. She recorded in considerable detail some of the classroom conversations and events, following closely at one point the progress of four pairs of children. I have quoted extensively from her writing, so any quotations not otherwise acknowledged are hers. The chapter ends with what was the final section of her original account, in which she reflects on the process of trying to develop ideas in other people's minds. It is fitting that as this is the last in the series of case studies, it should end with the direct voice of a teacher.

The topic was taught in the second half of the autumn term. The children had already been in school for one, two or three terms
