A BOOK LIKE THIS is never the work of one person. In the twenty-five years I have spent in the communications business, I have learned from some of the very best, and I continue to be inspired by their vision and dedication to the practice and theory of communicating with employees.

Dave Orman was my first boss when I joined the employee communications staff at ARCO. Dave was one of a small group of visionaries who set the standard for strategic, business-oriented communication back when most internal communication departments cranked out house organs. At the same time, I worked directly for the late Ken Estes, one of the best editors who ever lived.

Another one of those visionaries is Roger D'Aprix, who continues to counsel organizations and whose books continue to inform the profession.

Among others who have influenced and motivated me are Lester Potter, ABC, one of the masters of strategic planning; Angela Sinickas, ABC, who made internal communication measurement a practice deserving of respect; and Ron Martin, ABC, who showed how to meld the various elements of communication—strategic and tactical—into a practical program that works from day to day.

My NetGain partners deserve special note, since I speak with them often and seek their advice. Tudor Williams, ABC, is another measurement guru and an expert in the application of knowledge
