Organizing, Budgeting,
and Using Your Internal
Communications
Department

AS A LEADER, your communication role is to set the tone for proactive, candid, open communication that is designed to foster trust, enhance role knowledge, improve job satisfaction, and heighten employees' commitment to the company's goals. You establish the communication mandate.

But just as you rely on specialists to handle the company's legal issues and accounting chores, nobody expects you to produce newsletters or to maintain intranet sites. For that work, you rely on your employee communications department.

Communications is not an end; it is a means to an end. If your internal communications don't contribute measurably to the company's achievement of its business goals, why is it getting even a nickel of the company's hard-earned money? Thus, you set the agenda and your internal communications department executes it based on the skills and expertise you have sought when staffing the function. Typically, an employee communications department does the following:
