APPENDIX B: NUPROF Program at the
University of Nebraska–Lincoln
Office of Professional and Organizational Development Institute of Agricultural and Natural Resources
Purpose
Faculty are constantly required to be in a continual state of personal and professional change. NUPROF provides an avenue for personal and professional assessment directed toward professional renewal.
Program
NUPROF allows participants to examine the path of their careers in the context of the needs of IANR and to plan a sequence of activities to guide their professional growth. The program includes:
Entry. Faculty members indicate their desire to participate, attend an informational meeting, confer with department heads or unit administrators, submit an application, and, contingent upon approval from the appropriate dean, are admitted to the program.
Faculty Development Institute. To initiate the process, participants attend a 3-day retreat off campus. The purpose is to gain a better understanding of oneself and the nature of change, to initiate a search for alternatives, and to learn some methods for career planning. Because the Faculty Development Institute is an integral part of NUPROF, participants are asked to clear their calendars so they can attend.
Exploring options and gathering information. Over a period of weeks or months, each participant investigates professional, career, teaching, research, and extension alternatives; confers with resource persons, peers, appropriate administrators, and family members; and identifies personal and professional needs as well as those of the unit, discipline, and clientele. Participants work in self-directed trios or small groups during this phase.
Growth plans. After attending a work session on writing growth plans, each participant can submit a growth plan to the campus steering committee for funding. Growth plans may take into account long-range as well as immediate objectives. Funded for up to $1,500, growth
