The responses to the first and second editions of Biofeedback were very rewarding in terms of acceptance and reviews. The second edition added much to the first edition, essentially doubling the size. Yet, from new research areas and interests in biofeedback that have emerged in recent years, it was clear that there were still more topics that warranted inclusion. For instance, in the past several years, there has been a substantial expansion of EEG biofeedback/neurotherapy. Pelvic floor applications have also substantially expanded in the past several years and include more than treatment of incontinence. In addition, major medical centers provide biofeedback for a variety of pelvic-floor-related disorders. Pediatric applications have always been a major research area in biofeedback and continue to be so, receiving even more interest and attention in recent years. The relatively new area of respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) biofeedback has also been receiving considerable interest, with research support for several conditions. Other biofeedback applications, such as those for athletes and musicians, are also starting to garner enough interest to deserve attention in this text.
In order to address these new areas of interest, this third edition has been extensively revised and is largely a new text. There are 11 new chapters on new topics, as well as a number of new authors writing on topics covered in previous editions. The new chapters include a primer of EEG instrumentation (Chapter 5), a review chapter on EEG applications (Chapter 19), and two chapters on very specific EEG biofeedback applications developed in Germany (Chapters 20 and 21). Other new chapters include respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) (Chapter 11) and applications to musicians (Chapter 24) and athletes (Chapter 25). There is a new chapter specifically on pediatric headache (Chapter 30) and one on other pediatric applications (Chapter 31). There is also a new chapter on pelvic floor applications (Chapter 28). Finally, the new chapter on professional issues (Chapter 37) reflects the condensing of several prior chapters in the second edition, along with the addition of new content.
Most of the rest of the chapters have been revised, updated, and streamlined to varying degrees. Several chapters from the second edition have been combined into new chapters and a few chapters eliminated entirely.
On the occasion of the publication of this third edition, we together thank all the readers of the previous editions for their support, ideas, dedication, and feedback and look forward to the reception of readers of this new edition.
