There was an increase in grades between mid-year and final examinations for both groups, though the control group improvement was not as dramatic as for the experimental group. The results demonstrated that students in the control group improved their mean grades from mid-year to final grade by 2.45 grade scale points while students in the experimental group improved by an average of 5.67 grade score points. 2.45 and 5.67 are the t-values calculated statistically from the two means, the probability of the results occurring by chance being less than one in a hundred.
The null hypothesis (Ho) predicted that there would be no significant difference between the scores of the two groups and as that proved not to be the case, Cher Ping was able to reject the null hypothesis. Of the three students who began the CBL support programme with a failing grade, all three ended their first-year course by bringing their grades up to at least an A level pass. The six students who started the support programme with only a bare GCE A level pass grade also brought their grades up by at least two grade scale points.
