The task of building communicative relationships with children with ASD and other language delays has required a multidisciplinary approach to our work. No one theory would suffice to address the issues that have faced us in the 30 yearsof development. While we referto our modelasCommunicating Partners, that term reflects values and perspectives from several fields of child development, disabilities, education, and behavior change. Table 5.1 summarizes the theories and major proponents who have informed the development of Communicating Partners.
